Basic Interview Advice

 

We say basic, but simple things are so often overlooked, read and make sure you’re up to speed...

 

Before

 

Research

Familiarise yourself with the company, key products, services and latest news. You don’t have to go overboard but you should develop your understanding of the company, its industry and market. Make sure you know the interviewers name and job title in advance.

 

Questions

If you have any questions make a note of them. Keep to key questions, and make sure they are relevant. Ensure that are intelligent and insightful questions. These will impress the interviewer.

 

Curriculum Vitae

Ensure you have a copy of the same CV that has been submitted to the company. Take three copies of your CV with you. One for you, one for interviewer and a spare in case anyone else is brought in.

 

Skills and achievements

Consider your main ones in advance and consider how you can demonstrate these.

 

References

Ensure you have references that are willing to be contacted.

 

Travel

Check travel and directions in advance and allow plenty of time for your journey. Take a contact number with you in case you have any problems en route.

 

Dress

Generally this will be smart business attire. Check before the interview that your clothes are clean and fresh for interview.

§  Try to relax. Do not fidget.

§  Arrive in good time. Being on time will also help you relax and collect your thoughts. If something happens beyond your control that could cause you to be later, contact the interviewer in advance to advise them. If you are very early, it is better to have a coffee somewhere else until its nearer time.

§  Be positive, enthusiastic and alert in your mindset.

§  Scan the room once and then focus on the interviewer.

§  Sit upright, rest your hands on your lap and relax a little but without slouching.

§  Listen carefully to the interviewer’s questions. Be direct and to the point in your answers. Try to demonstrate your skills and achievements in your answers. Avoid ‘yes’, ‘no’ responses.

§  Interviewers may note your responses, this is normal, try not to let it distract you.

§  Make eye contact with the person asking the question, making intermittent eye contact with other members of the interview panel.

§  Ask questions when given the opportunity.

 

After

 
Follow up by thanking the interviewer for their time and re-affirm your interest in the role. Usually, a brief email will suffice.
