Social media activity most successful within small firms

Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are having much more success with their social networking activity than their larger counterparts, according to a new report by workspace provider Regus.

Those in social media positions within small firms seem to be doing a great job, with 45 per cent of SMEs attracting new business through social media. This compares with just 35 per cent of large businesses.

These figures come despite the fact that 40 per cent of large businesses spend at least 20 per cent of their marketing budget on social media activity, compared with just 31 per cent of SMEs.

One of the reasons behind the greater level of success among SMEs could be that a larger proportion of them stated that they thought a full marketing mix was not essential to the success of their marketing campaigns. Therefore, those looking for market research jobs could find that larger firms offer more opportunities, as they are more open to traditional marketing activities.

Regardless of the size of the business, social media is here to stay and many firms are now encouraging their employees to sign up to social networks. Regus’s Regional Director, Celia Donne, stated, “Social networking has finally come into its own in the commercial world, with the SME sector taking full advantage of their business contacts and commercial agility.”
